Warfare Phase

The Warfare Phase has three subphases, resolved in order.

A. Shotte Subphase

Starting with the player Leading in Morale, that player may fire eligible Troops with the ranged Shotte Quirk. The next player may then do the same.

Optionally, both players may instead alternate firing eligible Shotte Troops one at a time, until neither player has any eligible Troops remaining.

Note

Shotte is one-time use per time a Troop is played onto the battlefield, unless the card says otherwise. A Troop that is still mustering cannot fire.

B. Charge Subphase

The player Leading in Morale may Declare a Charge. Unless a card states otherwise, only the player Leading in Morale may declare a Charge each turn.

  • If they Charge → move to Combat Resolution. Allied Troops either fight, or move if they are not adjacent to an enemy Troop.
  • If they decline → the Warfare Phase ends, play moves to the Attrition Phase, and they gain Local Favor.

Burrow bypasses this

A Burrowed Troop may un-Burrow and declare a Charge regardless of who is Leading in Morale.

Local Favor

When any player is Leading in Morale and does not declare a Charge, they gain Local Favor until the end of their next Muster Phase.

Local Favor grants one of the following, chosen when it resolves:

Local Favor is an evergreen ability — it is available to every faction, not just the Paw Coalition.

C. Combat Resolution

The player who declared the Charge resolves all combats.

Order of resolution: starting with the highest-Morale Troop they control that is adjacent to an enemy Troop, and working down. Troops deal damage simultaneously, equal to their Vigor value.

  • When a Troop reaches 0 Vitality it is defeated and removed from the battlefield.
  • A Troop adjacent to multiple enemy Troops fights all of them, but must divide its Vigor damage between them — so choose carefully. This applies to attackers and defenders alike.
  • To be eligible to fight, a Troop must be adjacent to an enemy Troop and not Lost.

The subphase ends once all eligible combats are resolved. Allied Troops not adjacent to any enemy may then move 1 space.

After that, move to the Attrition Phase.

Combat Rulings

Question Ruling
Does a Troop that becomes Lost mid-Charge still fight? No. It gains the Lost status immediately and drops out of combat.
Can a Lost Troop reconnect during a Charge? No. It stays Lost until the Attrition Phase.
Does defeating an enemy let the victor move into the empty space? No.
Can a Troop that is still mustering fight? No — see Still Mustering.

The Troop Wages Rule

If a Troop is destroyed the same turn it was Mustered or un-Burrowed — before the Attrition Phase — that Troop must still be provisioned that turn.

You pay for the soldiers you called up, whether or not they survived the day.
