See The Battlefield for a full description of each zone.

Before You Begin

Both players come with an assembled deck of 30–40 cards. For every Territory card added to the game beyond the first, players may add 10 cards to their deck.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Decide territories. Players agree on how many Territory cards they are fighting over (1 or more). Place them in the centre of the table between both players.
  2. Set your play area. Each player's Vanguard is on one side of the Territory card — top or bottom. This is where they will play their cards onto the battlefield.
  3. Shuffle and draw. Both players shuffle their decks and each draw a hand of 7 cards.
  4. Forage. Before the game begins, both players may Forage 1–2 cards from their hand. These cards go to their Homeland, providing the game's main resource: Provision supply. Foraged cards represent Troops out hunting and foraging, keeping your army fed and supplied.
  5. Determine first player. Whichever player has the higher cumulative Morale value among the cards they Foraged begins the game Leading in Morale and goes first. In the case of a tie, roll a die.

Provision supply

A card produces Provision supply equal to the Provision cost it would otherwise charge. A Troop that costs 1 Provision provides 1 Provision supply when Foraged; a card that costs 2 provides 2, and so on.

3–4 Player Games

The 3rd and 4th players use a Flank as their Vanguard. Their Vanguard is still considered a Flank for all rules purposes.
